What Is the Chipmunks Dance on TikTok?

Nov 1, 2026

The Chipmunks Dance, also called the Alvin and the Chipmunks dance, is a three-person TikTok dance that took off in October 2026. Three people stand in a row, swap places and take turns up front, while the comments decide who is Alvin, who is Simon and who is Theodore. It has nothing official behind it: it is just TikTok users, usually siblings or friends, doing the same 25 seconds.

What is the Alvin and the Chipmunks dance?

It is a group dance for exactly three people, and that is the whole joke. Alvin and the Chipmunks is a trio, so any three people doing the moves get cast as the chipmunks. Under one of the biggest posts, three friends in maroon, blue and green, the top comments are "wait the chipettes have competition" and "Theodore's energy is EVERYTHING". The most common hashtag is #alvinandchipmunks, and the trend also runs under #chipmunksdance and #chipettes.

Costumes are optional. Plenty of people dance it in plain hoodies. Others add round ears, glasses for Simon and a red top with a big A for Alvin, and around Halloween it turned into a group costume idea.

The Chipmunks Dance song

The sound is a fast club edit that opens on the hook of "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)", the 1984 Dead or Alive single, and then moves into a chant on the beat. The link to the chipmunks is an old one: The Chipmunks' own version of the song plays over the end credits of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel from 2009. People tag posts #youspinmeround, though on TikTok the sound is listed under the names of the people who uploaded it, so searching the song's title will not always find it.

How the Chipmunks Dance goes

Timings are from the most played version, and every group has its own small variations.

  1. The row (0 to 3.5 seconds). Three in a row, the one in the middle a step ahead, all staring at the camera.
  2. The second turn (3.5 to 8.5 seconds). The one on the left takes the middle and dances with their back to the camera.
  3. The third turn (8.5 to 11 seconds). The one on the right comes up close.
  4. Back to the first (11 to 13.5 seconds). The first dancer takes the front again, arms wide.
  5. Round again (from 13.5 seconds). The second dancer comes back to the middle, and they keep trading the front spot until the end.

How the Chipmunks trend spread

Dates come from the TikTok posts. We could not trace who started it, so this is what we can see, not where it began.

  • October 16, 2026: @wenersisters post it in round ears, tagged #chipettes. It passes 4.6 million plays.
  • October 18: @athenaa_c and two siblings dance it on a deck, tagged #Siblings. It passes 18 million plays, the most of any we found.
  • October 23: @jamestanner9 and two friends do it on a sidewalk at night in maroon, blue and green. It passes 7 million plays.
  • October 30: @kimberlykimpena's trio does it in ears and an A top under #halloween and #triocostume. It passes 5 million plays.

Remakes keep coming, from school hallways to tennis courts.
